Terms of Service
Last updated: November 3, 2026
These terms cover the Karoto app and this website. They’re short, because there isn’t much to regulate between us.
The agreement
Karoto is made by one independent developer. By downloading or using the app, or this website, you’re agreeing to these terms. If anything here doesn’t sit right with you, that’s completely fine: just don’t use the app.
What Karoto does
Karoto is a recipe app. It turns recipes into a clear tree of ingredients and steps, and helps you cook, plan meals and keep a grocery list. It’s a cooking tool, and it isn’t professional dietary, nutritional or medical advice.
Free to use
Karoto is free to use. There are no subscriptions, no purchases and no ads.
Your recipes and your data
- Your recipes, folders, tags, meal plans and settings belong to you.
- Everything you add to Karoto is stored on your device. I have no servers, no accounts, and no way to see your data. The Privacy Policy covers this in detail.
- If you use iCloud, your data syncs through your own private iCloud account, protected by Apple’s encryption. I can’t access it there either.
- You can delete your data at any time from the app’s settings. Deleting it removes it from your device and, if you use iCloud, from your iCloud sync.
Recipes you add from elsewhere
You can add recipes from website links, pasted text, screenshots and photos. Karoto doesn’t read recipes from social media links. Screenshots of posts are read on your device, and the posts remain the property of their creators, and you’re responsible for using them in line with the creators’ rights. Karoto only reads what you give it, and it doesn’t claim ownership of any recipe. Please keep imported recipes for personal use, and don’t republish other people’s work as your own.
Automatic reading and structuring
Karoto reads and sorts recipes automatically. On supported devices, this uses Apple Intelligence, and otherwise it uses simpler matching built into the app. Automatic results can contain mistakes, such as a wrong amount, a missed ingredient or a step in the wrong place. Please check every recipe before you cook from it.
Cooking, safety and allergies
Cooking involves heat, sharp tools and raw food. You’re responsible for how you prepare and handle food, including cooking times, temperatures and food safety. Karoto can’t know about your allergies, intolerances or dietary needs, so always check ingredients yourself, especially for recipes imported from other sources.
Sharing with a household
If you share your cookbook with other people, they can see and use what you share with them. You choose who to invite, and you can remove people at any time. Sharing works through iCloud, so it’s governed by Apple’s terms and your own iCloud account.
Using Karoto fairly
Please use Karoto for its purpose. Don’t try to break it, misuse it, or use it to do anything unlawful or to harm others.
No warranty and limits of liability
Karoto is provided “as is”, without promises about accuracy or fitness for a particular purpose. To the fullest extent the law allows, I’m not liable for any loss or harm arising from using the app, including loss of data, mistakes in a recipe, or the results of cooking one. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have by law that can’t be waived.
App Store Terms
These terms are between you and the developer of Karoto, not Apple. Apple isn’t responsible for the app or for providing support for it.
Changes
If these terms ever change (say, when the app gains a meaningful new feature), I’ll update this page and the date at the top. Continuing to use Karoto after that means you’re okay with the update.
