Privacy Policy

Last updated: November 3, 2026

The short version: Karoto doesn’t collect your data. There are no accounts, no servers, no ads and no tracking. Your recipes stay on your devices, and sync through your own iCloud if you use it.

What stays on your device

Your recipes, folders, tags, meal plans, grocery lists and settings are stored on your device. Only you can see them. Deleting a recipe removes it from your device, and deleting the app removes the data stored on that device.

What Karoto doesn’t do

  • It doesn’t collect, store or sell your personal data.
  • It doesn’t have accounts or sign-ins.
  • It doesn’t show ads or use advertising or tracking tools.
  • It doesn’t send your recipes to me or to any server I run. I don’t have one.

iCloud sync

If you’re signed in to iCloud, Karoto can sync your cookbook between your own devices through your private iCloud account. That data is stored by Apple and protected by Apple’s encryption. I can’t access it. How Apple handles it is covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy.

Sharing with a household

If you share your cookbook with other people, it’s done through iCloud’s sharing. The people you invite can see what you share. Your own draft recipes stay private. You choose who to invite and can remove people at any time. I don’t see who you share with.

Importing recipes

  • Website links. When you paste a link or share a page from Safari, Karoto downloads that page directly from your device, the same as opening it in a browser. The website you visit can see the request as it would for any visitor.
  • Social media. Karoto can’t read links from social media apps and websites, such as TikTok and Instagram. To add a recipe from a post, take screenshots of it and add those instead. Karoto doesn’t contact these services.
  • Pasted text. Text you paste is read on your device.
  • Screenshots and photos. Text in images is read on your device. Karoto only sees the images you choose. It keeps them with the recipe so you can see the original, and syncs them through your iCloud if you use it.
  • Clipboard. Karoto can notice when your clipboard looks like a recipe or a link, so it can offer to import it. It reads the content only when you choose to paste.

Apple Intelligence

On supported devices, Karoto uses Apple Intelligence to work out which ingredients belong to which step. Depending on the request, Apple Intelligence may run entirely on your device, or use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, which is designed so that your data isn’t stored or made accessible to Apple. The recipe text is processed by Apple’s system, and Karoto doesn’t send it anywhere else. When Apple Intelligence isn’t available, Karoto uses simpler matching on your device. Learn more...

Permissions

Karoto asks for access only when a feature needs it, and you can change these in Settings at any time.

  • Reminders: to keep your grocery list in the Reminders app.
  • Notifications: for timers and cooking reminders.
  • Camera: for hands-free gestures in cooking mode. The camera image is used on your device to recognize a gesture, and Karoto doesn’t record or store it.
  • Photos: to import screenshots and photos you select.

Your choices

  • Export your recipes from the app at any time.
  • Delete recipes, or your whole cookbook, from within the app.
  • Manage or delete your iCloud data in your device’s iCloud settings.
  • Turn off any permission in Settings.

Changes

If this policy ever changes (say, when the app gains a meaningful new feature), I’ll update this page and the date at the top. Continuing to use Karoto after that means you’re okay with the update.
